ACOTPRO (Asociación Conservacionista para la Protección de la Tortuga Marina del Progreso) is a community association created to unite and empower the local conservationists working to protect the sea turtles nesting in Drake Bay. ACOTPRO was created to protect sea turtles and their ecosystem and to generate economic resources in the community of El Progreso. By promoting good practices, sustainable use of natural resources and responsible tourism, we have been able to release over 70,000 babies into the Pacific Ocean. However, there is still a lot more work that needs to be done in order to continue saving the marine turtle species.
ACOTPRO's environmental projects are designed to protect the precious natural resources of the Osa Peninsula while simultaneously benefiting the communities that depend upon them. Learn about our community-led projects here, and find out how you can help by becoming a volunteer.
The Sea Turtle Conservancy is managed by the local people with the help of International Volunteers. All of our volunteer programs include orientation, training and all-inclusive accommodation in one of our comfortable and friendly homestay houses. Immerse yourself in an authentic 'Tico' experience and help to conserve the environment!
